Scope of work: Goal was to determine the condition of existing system, what could be done to reduce utility bills and increase the indoor air quality?
Site Visit: The project was reviewed by Total Air & Heat and it was determined the 1st step was to perform a duct blaster test to check the integrity of the duct system. The duct system leaked badly enough that the actual duct blaster was not able to pressurize the duct system. It was determined that there were so many leaks in the return air duct chases and at duct seams; that the best approach was to remove the existing duct system and replace it with a high efficiency foil flex duct system. The home had trouble in the past staying comfortable on hot days with only 1 system on 3,100 sq. ft. in conjunction with the duct leakage; a load calculation determined a 5-ton system would work with a properly designed duct system and insulation upgrades.
Goal: Install a new HVAC system that will be energy efficient, keep the home comfortable on hot Texas days, and provide a high quality air filtration system. In addition, accomplish these goals using 1 cooling/heating system.
HVAC system: The existing Carrier system was a mid 1980s vintage system and rated at 10 SEER. For its time, this was a top of the line system. It was determined the best choice for this home was the Trane XL19i 2 stage cooling system with a variable speed furnace with 2 stage heat. In addition, a Trane Clean Effects air filter system was installed.
Duct System: The old duct system was completely abandoned except for a few grill locations. The old return air chases leaked bad enough they had to be abandoned. A new foil flex duct system using R8 insulation was installed; new supply air outlets were added as needed. In addition, return air was installed in every bedroom to keep them comfortable with doors closed.
The entire project was valued at $20,000 and included:
- Trane 2TTZ9060A1000A XL19i series 2 stage cooling system with matching cooling coil
- Trane TUD100R9V5K Variable speed air flow, 2 stage heat gas furnace
- Trane TFD210ALFR000A CleanEffects whole house filtration system
- Trane TCONT803A touch screen thermostat with humidity control.
- High efficiency duct system using R8 flex duct, mastic sealed, with air balancing dampers.
