Check Out Our Progress:

Sheetrock

Our new addition has changed again. We have installed ½" sheetrock to the walls and ceilings of our new addition. Notice the sheets are run horizontally rather than vertically. This allows for better finish out when we start the tape and bed process.

The drywall is installed with "drywall nails" which have cupped heads to help hold drywall compound in the tape and bed process. Sometimes, "drywall screws" are used instead of nails.

The next step involves "finishing out" the walls and ceilings. This step is called tape and bed. First, drywall tape is installed over the joints of the sheetrock. This can be done either with self-adhering tape or by coating the seam with drywall compound and then the tape is troweled right into the compound. The compound is also used to smooth over all exposed nails or screw heads. Drywall compound can be bought premixed or in larger quantities, dry and made up on the job. Drywall compound is like a gypsum batter that goes on wet and dries hard. After the first coat, the walls and ceilings are sanded smooth, and another thin coating of compound is added to the already taped and bedded areas. The tape and bed process generally takes several days and creates quite a bit of dust.

The final step is adding the texture. In our kitchen, we have used a "light roll texture" which gives the walls and ceilings and even consistency.
