Check Out Our Progress:

Insulation

We are now in the insulation stage. Although insulation may not be one of the features of our kitchen, it does however, plays and important roll in our new addition. It includes not only the ceiling and walls, but our floor is also exposed to the outside therefore it too, must be insulated.

The thickness and type of insulation we use will help keep the heat in during the winter like a blanket. During the summer and the intense Texas heat, we use the analogy of a cooler that you keep drinks and ice in. The better insulated the cooler is, the longer the ice will last and the drinks stay cold. The same applies for our kitchen during the summer. A well-insulated addition (or home) will allow for a more efficient air-conditioning system i.e. it doesn't have to run as much to keep our space cool.

In our new kitchen, we used the maximum R-13 for 2 x 4 walls using fiberglass batt insulation. Our ceiling is an R30 and floor is also an R30, which is 12" of fiberglass insulation paper faced on one side.
