Check Out Our Progress:

Framing/Windows & Doors

We are now in the framing/ windows and doors stage. The framing stage is when the "rough framing" (floor, walls, ceiling joists, roof) or the main structure is built. Once the framing was complete, the new box window, glass block and a wood French door, which will be stained, were installed.

Our kitchen has 2 x 4 walls, and uses 2 x 12 for the ceiling joists. The ceiling joists were so large because of the width of the room. Large beams were built to span the openings such as windows and doors. Skylight wells were framed out in the ceiling to accommodate our skywindows. We'll tell you more about our skywindows later on in the project.

Another beam was built where the wall was removed on the (old) exterior sides of the kitchen. This was to support the (existing) roof of the existing house. You will note the large sections of wall, which were removed opening up the old kitchen to the new kitchen. The old kitchen will accommodate the new pantry cabinets, new desk and work area, as well as existing display cabinets at the far end.

Once the framing was complete, the new window (large vinyl casement window) was installed in the box window area and a wood French door, which will be stained, was installed over by the "bake center". Glass blocks, which have become extremely popular because of their versatility, are laid on either side of the box window. These "backsplash blocks" will add beauty and light to our granite countertops. Note also, the use of glass block as sidelights in the box window.

Once we have completed our windows and doors, our skywindows are installed, we are now ready for our plumbers to come in and run water lines, bring the drain lines through the walls and top out "vent stacks" which are needed for the drains to drain water.
