The weather pattern that is most difficult for foundations is a wet spring followed by a hot, dry summer. In 1999, Texas had an unusually cool and wet spring. If this summer is typical, hot and dry, watering will be extra important.
Here are some helpful hints:
- Water with soaker hoses placed 6" to 12" around the foundation. Watering will depend on how much rain has fallen (or not).
- If you have patios or driveways against your foundation, run the soaker hoses around the outside edges of the patios and driveways.
- Keep your shrubs trimmed back. The larger a plant, the more water it will need. If you are putting in new plants, try to use plants with smaller root systems. Examples are nandina, boxwood, and abelia.
