Tips for Building a Successful Deck

  • When you dig your holes for the posts you are setting for your structure, make sure the concrete is slightly above grade and not below to hold water.
  • Use treated material only and set your joists on 16" centers rather than 2-foot. It makes a stronger deck. Also remember to crown your joists.
  • If you are nailing, use dipped nails and not just plain, galvanized nails.
  • Screw your deck boards down with stainless steel screws rather than nailing them down because nails can work loose.
  • Crown your deck boards if you are using treated lumber. Crown goes up and there is less chance for cupping.
